CHAPTER NINE

SOPHIE WATCHED AS Lachie tapped Finn’s artificial foot then work his way up the carbon fibre pole and chuckle. It looked like something from a sci-fi movie, all black and silver and shiny with a skin-coloured foot encased by a shoe. Any adults seeing it would’ve been hard-pressed not to stare but Lachie seemed to be taking it all in his stride. But kids were like that; they accepted differences, barely even noticed them. Her heart stalled. This was the breakthrough Finn had been hoping for.

She craned her neck to have a better view of his prosthetic, then thought better of it. It wasn’t her business. Instead, she watched them settle down together and then Finn turn the pages and say the words. The way he looked at his son almost broke her heart in two. He was invested and trying hard. That was something. A beginning.

The kiss had pushed everything from her memory back into reality. The past and the present were getting dangerously blurred. He’d tasted exactly as she’d remembered. And even though she’d only spent one night with him she remembered the way he kissed too. Remembered the way he’d made her feel.

Even though she was enjoying his company, she couldn’t help feeling panicked that this was all happening too quickly, that they needed to slow things down.

He seemed to be aware she was watching, turned and waved, which made Lachie look up and come running over and the book reading was abruptly over. ‘Sorry, I didn’t mean to disturb you.’

‘He likes me.’ Finn looked as if he’d been given the best Christmas present ever. ‘I think.’

‘Of course he does.’ How could he not? ‘I told you it was just a matter of time. But don’t be put off if he starts to gravitate to me again. He’s tired and likely to get clingy.’

‘And kids always want the familiar when they’re tired, right?’ But she’d broken the spell for them and now Lachie was stretching his arms out to be picked up by her.

Finn twisted to get himself out of the beanbag; for most people it would have been an easy manoeuvre, but for him it looked difficult. She should have thought about that and chosen a more comfortable chair. But then he’d have hated that she was thinking of concessions for him. She turned away so as not to be seen watching.

Once he was upright he laughed. ‘Everything is so much easier with two legs. If only I’d known before. Can I walk home with you guys?’

She tried to crush the uplift in her heart. It wouldn’t do to get too involved. But she seemed unable to stop it. ‘Sure. But your car’s still over at the clinic.’

‘It’s not far; I’ll walk over later and get it.’

‘You can do the boots and bars tonight then.’ She added an evil-sounding laugh. ‘My first night off. Ever.’

‘I’d love to. Anything to help.’ Again with the Christmas present smile. Which did nothing to calm down the hitch
